Ongoing Training for Current Tutors

DCLC tutors are encouraged to seek out resources and trainings that will enhance their tutoring efforts, as well as to consult regularly with their educational coordinator. Sharpening one's tutoring skills is an important way to ensure that you are effectively serving the needs of your adult learner.

In 2012, DCLC will be initiating a procedure for tutors to set improvement goals for the year and to keep in touch regarding your progress. More information will be coming soon.

Dr. Richard Cooper Leads a Workshop

DCLC is proud to welcome back Dr. Richard Cooper for two trainings on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Richard Cooper, Ph.D., is director and founder of the Center for Alternative Learning in Havertown, PA, as well as a nationally acclaimed learning specialist, trainer, speaker and author. With more than 25 years of experience as an adult educator, Dr. Cooper has been providing staff development training nationwide on subjects related to learning disabilities, problems and differences. Feel free to enroll in both sessions and bring your lunch for the break!

Teaching Reluctant Writers
Saturday, February 18, 2012, 9:30 a.m. to Noon

Trainer: Dr. Richard Cooper, Learning Disabilities Specialist

Many adult learners are reluctant writers. They do not write because when they do write, they expose weaknesses in spelling, handwriting and sentence structure. This training will provide techniques for motivating adult learners, as well as helping learners understand the structure of language and acquire strategies for expressing ideas. Participants will experiment with various techniques in an interactive workshop that helps learners to develop their ideas and organize their thoughts. Teaching Adults with Low-Level Literacy and Numeracy Skills

Trainer: Dr. Richard Cooper, Learning Disabilities Specialist

This training session is designed for adult educators and literacy tutors working with adults who have very low-level reading and math ability. The training will focus on adapting a variety of adult literacy techniques to low-level students. Setting realistic goals for student progress and helping students set their own realistic goals will also be discussed. Consider taking the morning session (described above), too. On-Line Trainings Available

World Education offers a variety of free, self-paced trainings on topics of interest to tutors of adults. Topics include multiple intelligences, ESL and technology, numeracy, and student assessment. Check out their offerings, but please note that some trainings do require a fee.
