The Delaware County Literacy Council relies on many community partners to pursue its mission and to provide literacy services to local adults. In turn, the Literacy Council is happy to make a brief presentation on the importance of literacy for local organizations or businesses. To invite a speaker for your next meeting or to learn more about becoming a community partner, please contact us at 610.876.4811 or at delco@delcoliteracy.org.
Here are some of the many ways our community partners have an impact on the progress of our adult learners.
• The Delaware County Library System partners with the Literacy Council by hosting volunteer tutors and their learners and by collaborating on various literacy-related projects.
• Delaware County Literacy Council is affiliated with ProLiteracy, a national literacy organization, and with the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Bureau of Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE). The Literacy Council promotes and upholds the standards of both groups.
• The Literacy Council is an agency of both the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania and the United Way of Southeast Delaware County, collaborating with both organizations to improve the effectiveness of our fund-raising, training, resources, and nonprofit practices.
• Local Rotary clubs support the efforts of the Literacy Council through event sponsorships and public advocacy for literacy.
• Sun East Federal Credit Union offers financial literacy classes for DCLC's adult learners, and invites DCLC learners to participate in its "People Helping People" annual essay contest.
• Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union sponsors DCLC events and provides representation on the Board of Directors.
• Local universities and places of worship host tutor trainings and publicize our volunteer opportunities.
• Other noted partners include Crozer-Keystone Health System, Dollar General, Harrah's Casino and Racetrack of Chester, Kimberly Clark, the Philadelphia Foundation, and the Sunshine Lady Foundation.
• Deloitte employees of Glen Mills and of Philadelphia selected DCLC as an IMPACT Day site in 2010 and 2011, providing the Literacy Council with valuable skilled volunteering, as well as much-needed building clean-up and maintenance. Watch the videos from Deloitte IMPACT day below.
