Skills Included in Basic LiteracyBasic Literacy, also known as Adult Basic Education (ABE), includes basic reading, writing, and math skills. Literacy tutors also often cover computer skills, job-related skills, and other material generated from the adult student's specific goals.
Free tutoring and small-group instruction are available for adults who need Basic Literacy instruction. Tutoring occurs twice a week at a public location agreed upon by the tutor and student, such as a local library. Daytime and evening meeting times are available. Some classes devoted solely to math skills are available.
Learners must be 18 years or older. All students are assessed before being placed in a class or with a tutor. Interested adults must call to register for orientation and assessment at 610.876.4811.
Adult learners are partnered with trained tutors who work one-on-one toward student-set goals. These learning teams meet in DCLC's learning centers as well as libraries, churches, and public buildings across the county.
